Social worker in Australia? Learn AASW IELTS 7 each requirements, PTE scores for 20 PR points and how Boston Institute can help you prepare.

Back to Blog

Your social work qualification could open the door to an exciting career in Australia. But is your English test score holding you back from taking the next step towards permanent residency?

If you’ve completed a Bachelor or Master of Social Work in Australia, or hold an overseas social work qualification, understanding the English requirements is an important part of your professional and migration journey.

Many social work graduates face two major challenges:

  1. 1Achieving IELTS Academic 7.0 in each band to satisfy the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) English-language requirements.
  2. 2Achieving Superior English proficiency to claim 20 points under Australia’s skilled migration points test.

At Boston Institute, Sydney, we help social work graduates prepare for both milestones through targeted IELTS Academic and PTE Academic training.

Understanding the AASW English requirements for social workers

The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the recognised assessing authority for Social Worker (ANZSCO 272511) under Australia’s skilled migration system.

Although social workers are generally not required to obtain compulsory professional registration in Australia, AASW recognition, membership eligibility and skills assessment can be important for employment and migration.

For applicants who need to satisfy the AASW English-language requirement, the standard IELTS Academic scores are:

IELTS Academic componentMinimum band
Listening7.0
Reading7.0
Writing7.0
Speaking7.0

Important: IELTS Academic is the English test accepted by AASW under its current assessment policy. PTE Academic cannot be substituted for this requirement.

The AASW also provides alternative ways to meet its English requirement, including combining eligible IELTS results from two sittings within six months, with no individual score below 6.5, and eligible IELTS One Skill Retake results. Certain applicants may qualify for an education-based English exemption.

Applicants should check their individual eligibility with AASW.

Why is IELTS Writing 7 so challenging for social work graduates?

For many social work graduates, reaching IELTS 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking may be manageable, but achieving the same result in Writing can be challenging.

IELTS Academic Writing requires candidates to demonstrate more than good English vocabulary. They need to construct well-developed arguments, organise information logically, demonstrate grammatical accuracy, and respond precisely to the task.

A common situation is a student receiving:

  • Listening: 8.0
  • Reading: 7.5
  • Speaking: 7.5
  • Writing: 6.5

Despite strong results in three components, the student has not met the standard single-sitting AASW English requirement.

The good news? Improving IELTS Writing is possible with the right guidance, personalised feedback and consistent practice.

At Boston Institute, our IELTS preparation focuses on identifying the specific reasons students are losing marks and helping them develop the skills needed to reach Band 7.

Our training includes IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 strategies, essay structure, grammar improvement, vocabulary development, timed practice and individual feedback. Rather than repeatedly attempting IELTS without understanding their weaknesses, students can follow a structured improvement plan. For more on this, read our guide to improving your English writing for IELTS and PTE.

IELTS 7 each may meet the AASW requirement, but what about permanent residency?

Achieving IELTS Academic 7.0 in each component is an important milestone. However, for social workers planning to apply for permanent residency through Australia’s points-tested skilled migration program, English proficiency can also make a significant difference to their overall points.

English proficiencyIELTS requirementPoints
Competent English6.0 in each band0
Proficient English7.0 in each band10
Superior English8.0 in each band20

Moving from Proficient English to Superior English can add another 10 points to your skilled migration points total. For applicants who currently have only Competent English, achieving Superior English can provide 20 English-language points.

These additional points can strengthen an eligible skilled migration application, although they do not guarantee an invitation or permanent residency. Our guide to English points for the 189, 190 and 491 visas explains how they fit the wider points test.

Do social workers need IELTS 8 each for PR, or can they take PTE?

This is where a smart English preparation strategy can make a difference. Once social work graduates have met the AASW English requirement, they may decide to pursue Superior English to maximise their skilled migration points.

One option is achieving IELTS 8.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. However, reaching IELTS Writing Band 8 can be particularly challenging for some students.

An alternative is to prepare for PTE Academic to demonstrate Superior English for migration purposes.

PTE Academic is a computer-based English proficiency test accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for eligible visa applications.

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the minimum PTE Academic scores required for Superior English are:

PTE Academic componentMinimum score
Listening69
Reading70
Writing85
Speaking88

These are the current Superior English thresholds that correspond to the IELTS 8-each level for Australian migration purposes. The previous PTE requirement of 79 in each component applies only to tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, subject to validity and visa rules.

PTE Writing 85 and Speaking 88 remain demanding targets. However, some students may find the computer-based assessment format better suited to their abilities than IELTS.

With structured practice, familiarity with the PTE assessment criteria, effective time management and targeted training, these scores can become realistic goals for suitably prepared candidates.

A two-stage English strategy for social workers

At Boston Institute, we encourage social work graduates to understand their English requirements separately and develop a preparation plan around their individual circumstances.

Stage 1: IELTS Academic 7 each for the AASW assessment

The first stage focuses on meeting the AASW English-language requirement, where applicable. Students work towards IELTS Academic 7.0 in all four components, with particular attention to areas in which they are underperforming. This helps them prepare the English evidence required for their AASW application.

Stage 2: PTE Academic to target 20 PR points

After meeting the AASW requirement, eligible students may prepare for PTE Academic Superior English. This second stage focuses on helping students achieve the required migration scores, particularly in PTE Writing and Speaking.

The aim is to help students strengthen their English proficiency and potentially claim the maximum 20 points available for English under the skilled migration points test.

You do not necessarily need to score IELTS 8 in each band to claim 20 English points for PR. An eligible PTE Academic result can also meet the Superior English requirement.

Some candidates may prefer to attempt IELTS 8 each, while others may benefit from transitioning to PTE after completing their AASW English requirement. The best option depends on the student’s current scores, strengths, weaknesses and preparation needs. Our comparison of IELTS and PTE in Australia can help you decide.

Australian permanent residency pathways for social workers

Social Worker (ANZSCO 272511) is an eligible occupation for several Australian skilled migration pathways, subject to applicable criteria.

Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

A points-tested permanent visa pathway for eligible skilled workers who receive an invitation to apply.

Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

A permanent visa pathway requiring nomination by an Australian state or territory. Eligible applicants can receive an additional five nomination points.

Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491)

A provisional regional visa pathway that can provide 15 nomination or eligible family sponsorship points. It may lead to permanent residency through subclass 191 when the relevant conditions are met.

Other employer-sponsored pathways may also be available depending on the applicant’s circumstances.

A suitable skills assessment, eligibility under the relevant visa rules and other criteria are required. Achieving 20 points for Superior English can improve an eligible applicant’s overall points score, but invitations depend on government selection processes and other migration requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What IELTS score do social workers need for the AASW skills assessment?

The standard AASW requirement is IELTS Academic with at least 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. AASW also accepts some alternatives, such as combining two eligible sittings within six months with no score below 6.5, and eligible One Skill Retake results.

Can social workers use PTE for the AASW assessment?

No. Under AASW’s current assessment policy, IELTS Academic is the accepted English test, and PTE Academic cannot be substituted. PTE can still be used for the separate migration points test.

How many PR points do social workers get for Superior English?

Superior English is worth 20 points in the skilled migration points test. Proficient English is worth 10 points, and Competent English is worth 0 points.

What PTE score is Superior English for Australian PR?

For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Superior English needs Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88. The older 79-in-each requirement only applies to tests taken on or before 6 August 2025.

Do I need IELTS 8 each to claim 20 English points?

Not necessarily. An eligible PTE Academic result at the Superior English level also earns 20 points, so some social workers meet the AASW requirement with IELTS and then take PTE for migration points.
